What’s attract the most of Locorotondo, is that there aren’t specific touristic attractions: it’s the wonderful town itself a lure for tourists, who come here to spend a few hours walking through its little streets, sitting in the sun, in one of its characteristic squares; drinking, or dining in one of its typical alleys.
Sightseeing
Before entering the town, it is worthwhile taking a look at the surrounding valley, from the panoramic terrace, right in front of the Naples Door , whose two columns are still visible. Starting from here, it is possible to reach Vittorio Emanuele Square, where there is a touristic office, which can give all useful information not to miss anything of this wonderful village. The famous churches of Locorotondo are definitely worth a visit. Among them, the most important one is the Mother Church of Saint George, built between the XVII and the XIX century, right in the place where previously two ancient religious buildings stood. This Church is an example of Baroque style, typical of Apulia, with influence of the Renaissance, that gives it a particular print. Inside the Mother Church is preserved a relief depiction of Saint George, together with the Saints Peter and Paul and the dragon.
Also the Church of San Rocco, with its precious stuccos and its prestigious sculptural and pictorial patrimony can be visited. The Romanesque Church of Madonna della Greca is worth a visit, too.
A quick visit to the Clock Tower is a must. It is a building of the XVIII century that in the past hosted the university. Its famous clock, in ancient times, adorned the bell Tower of the Mother Church of Saint George.
A taste of Apulian cooking art
Locorotondo is surely the right place to taste typical Apulian cooking. An example is Locorotondo white sparkling wine, famous all around Italy. This wine can be paired, both, with first courses of Apulia cooking and the seconds, due to its particular versatility. A good idea is to visit the main wineries and buy wine directly from their producers.
